Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pressure Sand Filter?

A Pressure Sand Filter is a water treatment unit used to remove suspended solids, turbidity, dirt, sand particles, and other impurities from water by passing it through layers of filter media.

Where is a Pressure Sand Filter used?

PSF is commonly used in:

  • RO pretreatment systems
  • Cooling towers
  • Boiler feed water systems
  • ETP/STP plants
  • Industrial process water
  • Drinking water treatment plants
What impurities does a PSF remove?

A Pressure Sand Filter removes:

  • Turbidity
  • Suspended solids (TSS)
  • Mud and silt
  • Sand particles
  • Rust and scale particles
  • Colloidal impurities (partially)
What is the difference between PSF and Activated Carbon Filter?
Pressure Sand Filter Activated Carbon Filter
Removes suspended particles Removes chlorine, odor, color, and organics
Uses sand media Uses activated carbon media
Improves clarity Improves taste and smell
What is the operating pressure of a Pressure Sand Filter?

Typically 2.5 to 7.0 kg/cm², depending on the system design and application.

How often should backwashing be done?

Backwashing is generally done:

  • When pressure drop increases by 0.5-1.0 kg/cm²
  • Once every 1-3 days for continuous operation
  • As per water quality and load
What is backwashing?

Backwashing is the reverse flow of water through the filter to clean the sand media and remove trapped impurities.

How long does the filter media last?

High-quality sand media usually lasts 3 to 5 years, depending on water quality, operating conditions, and proper backwashing.

Can PSF remove dissolved salts or TDS?

No. A Pressure Sand Filter does not reduce TDS or dissolved salts. For TDS reduction, an RO Plant or DM Plant is required.

What is the filtration flow rate?

The typical filtration rate is 10-20 m³/hr per m² of filter area, depending on design.

What materials are available for PSF vessels?

Pressure Sand Filters are available in:

  • FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic)
  • MSRL / MSEP (Mild Steel Rubber Lined / Epoxy Painted)
  • SS304
  • SS316
What is the inlet water turbidity limit?

For best performance, inlet turbidity should generally be below 50 NTU. Higher turbidity may require clarification before filtration.

How do I know the filter needs cleaning?

Signs include:

  • Increased pressure drop
  • Reduced flow rate
  • Poor water clarity
  • Frequent downstream filter choking
Can PSF be installed before an RO plant?

Yes. A Pressure Sand Filter is one of the most common pretreatment units before an RO system and helps protect membranes from fouling.

What maintenance is required?

Regular maintenance includes:

  • Periodic backwashing
  • Checking pressure gauges
  • Inspecting valves and piping
  • Replacing media when required
What capacity of PSF do I need?

The required capacity depends on:

  • Flow rate (m³/hr)
  • Water quality
  • Turbidity level
  • Operating hours per day

Vasudev Water Solution provides customized PSF design as per your requirement.

Is automatic operation available?

Yes. PSF can be supplied with:

  • Manual valves
  • Multiport valves
  • Automatic valve systems
  • PLC-based automatic backwash systems
